Walter Harrison, President of the University of Hartford, was recently honored as Recipient of the NCAA Gerald R. Ford Award for 2015. Harrison was honored for his continued work in improving the academic success of student athletes while serving as the first and only chair of the Committee on Academic Performance for NCAA Division I. Harrison’s commitment to student athletes helped create and implement reforms that have increased graduation rates.
The award is named in recognition of Gerald R. Ford who served as President of the United States, Vice President of the United States, U.S. Congressman representing Western Michigan, in the US Navy throughout Word War II and graduated from Yale Law following a successful student-athlete career at the University of Michigan. Ford played center on two national championship teams (1932 and 1933) and was voted the team’s most valuable player in 1934. The award honors an individual who has provided significant leadership as an advocate for college sports over the course of his or her career.
