The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) aircraft carrier was officially commissioned on July 22, 2017 at Naval Station Norfolk. The USS Gerald R. Ford is the first ship of the new class of U.S. Navy ships, the Ford Class. Special guests included President Donald J. Trump, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis, ship CO Capt. Richard McCormack, the Ford Family, and thousands of attendees.

Michigan Wolverine Football Coach Jim Harbaugh, University Regents, and Alum also attended the Commissioning Ceremony. Gerald R. Ford played college football for the Wolverines and graduated from UM in 1935. Photos were taken by Bob Humphries, a University of Michigan Alumni.
