The US Navy Institute (USNI) recently reflected on the six US Presidents who served as both Commander-in-Chief and in the US Naval Reserve.

Following graduation from Yale Law and returning to Grand Rapids to practice law, Ford joined the US Naval Reserve soon after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Ford served throughout the Pacific Theater onboard the USS Monterey CVL 26.

Other Presidents who also served in the US Naval Reserves include John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush.

Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, FordĀ  and Bush served throughout World War II. Carter graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1946 and served in the US Navy until 1953 and in the Naval Reserve until 1961.
