BIOGRAPHY

David G. “Tripp” Frey, Jr. is a passionate community leader, entrepreneur and board member with a background spanning philanthropy, early-stage business, and finance. He currently serves as Chair of the Frey Foundation, where he helps direct strategy and governance for a $160 million endowment and $8 million annual grantmaking budget. He also sits on the foundation’s investment and grantmaking committees.

He is active in community and civic leadership, serving as Board Chair of the Ecliptic at Rosa Parks Circle Conservancy, a board member of Grand Rapids Whitewater, and executive committee member and capital campaign co-chair for Grand Action 2.0, helping lead a $50 million fundraising effort for major civic projects. 

Tripp has founded and led several ventures, including TREW Gear, a national technical ski and snowboard apparel brand. He began his career as an analyst at JPMorgan Asset Management.

Tripp holds an MBA from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and a BA in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a Certified Fund Specialist and an instrument-rated private pilot. His personal interests include skiing, cycling, running, bird hunting, trout fishing and tennis.

Tripp and his wife, Lucy, a highly respected pediatric dietitian, proudly live in Grand Rapids, MI and have two elementary aged sons.
