Steve Ford Delivers President Ford’s Eulogy at Jimmy Carter’s Funeral

January 9, 2025 – At President Carter’s State Funeral, Steve Ford delivered a moving eulogy on behalf of his late father, former President Gerald R. Ford.

Political-Rivals-Turned-Friends Are Shining Example of Working Together for the American Good

Gerald R. Ford and Jimmy Carter shared a unique and respectful bipartisan relationship that became a model of post-presidency collaboration. Despite being political opponents during the 1976 presidential election – when Carter narrowly defeated Ford – the two men developed a deep friendship rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to public service.

After leaving office, both Ford (a Republican) and Carter (a Democrat) found common ground on several issues and worked together for the common good. One of the most notable collaborations was their involvement with the National Commission on Federal Election Reform, where they pushed for changes to improve transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

In February 1983, Jimmy Carter (left) and Gerald Ford co-host an All-Democracies Conference at the Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor.

Their friendship was also personal. They frequently appeared together at public events, engaged in joint initiatives, and openly praised one another. Carter once described Ford as a man of integrity who helped the nation heal after the Watergate scandal. In turn, Ford admired Carter’s humanitarian work and commitment to peace.

When Ford passed away in 2006, Carter delivered a heartfelt eulogy, calling him “one of the most admirable public servants” he had ever known. In 2017, Carter received the Ford Presidential Foundation’s prestigious Medal for Distinguished Public Service.

Their relationship is often cited as a powerful example of how political rivals can move beyond partisanship to work together for the common good.
