WGVU Announces Virtual Field Trips: The Legacy of Betty Ford

WGVU Videos Include Lesson Plans Aligned with Michigan Social Studies Standards

First Ladies (and First Families) have an important role during the President’s time in office. Each First Lady has defined her own individual platform, priorities, and public responsibilities.

As First Lady, Betty Ford was a force. She set herself apart by defying typical expectations for women, while also remaining relatable to Americans at a time in history when stability and trust in the executive branch of government was much needed.

The education team at WGVU Public Media worked with the Foundation and Museum to bring Betty’s impactful service to a new generation through a new virtual field trip to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

This collection of short videos featuring President and Mrs. Ford’s daughter Susan Ford Bales explores what made the Fords the right family to follow Watergate, Betty’s role as First Lady, Betty’s championship for women’s rights, and how Betty revolutionized breast cancer awareness and substance rehabilitation.

Complete with lesson plans aligned to Michigan social studies standards, this virtual field trip a great way to introduce students to the role of the First Lady and to Betty—and a great way to prepare students to visit the Museum.

We loved this collaboration with WGVU and look forward to more and more students engaging with Betty’s legacy through the virtual field trips at the Museum.
