The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum are excited to announce a series of special events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of President Gerald R. Ford taking office. This historic occasion will be marked by an impressive panel discussion, a ribbon cutting for the new exhibit, and more.

Big Names Taking the Stage to Mark the 50th Anniversary of Ford’s Oath of Office

We are honored to welcome President Ford’s friends and family, including Steve and Mike Ford, sons of President and Mrs. Ford; Carla Hills, President Ford’s Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; and Maj. Gen. Albert Zapanta, President Ford’s Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. This esteemed panel will reflect on the pivotal events of August 8 and 9, 1974, and discuss how that 24-hour period changed Ford’s family, American politics, and world history.

Ribbon Cutting for New Exhibit, “Ford at 50: Decisions That Defined a Presidency”

Following the panel discussion, guests are invited to the ribbon cutting for the new exhibit, “Ford at 50: Decisions that Defined a Presidency.” This original, temporary exhibit features a variety of materials from the Museum’s collection, including presidential artifacts, archival documents, and historic film footage, highlighting the unprecedented decisions President Ford made while in office. The museum’s supervisory curator, Dr. Mirelle Luecke, will be on hand to answer any questions during the exhibit viewing.

On August 9, join us for another significant event as Mike Ford, Steve Ford, Carla Hills, and Albert Zapanta move from highlighting how the events changed history, to exploring President Ford’s leadership. They will commemorate his swearing-in (on August 9, 1974 at 12:03 p.m.) as president by sharing how Ford made a positive impact on the world.

Church Bells Ringing Around Grand Rapids to Mark the Moment Ford Took Office

For those unable to attend in person, several churches around Grand Rapids will toll their bells at 12:03 p.m. on August 9 to mark the exact moment Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States. Residents and workers in the area are encouraged to step outside and experience this historic tribute.
