Greatest Generation Celebration: Honoring the 80th Anniversary of the End of World War II

Join us in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the hometown of President Gerald R. Ford, as we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with a heartfelt tribute to the Greatest Generation. Signature Events

Honor Parade & Wings of Honor

📅 Monday, September 1 (Labor Day) | 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
📍 Downtown Grand Rapids

Step back in time with a grand Honor Parade, reminiscent of the celebration 80 years ago at the end of WWII. Watch as era-authentic civilian vehicles, military equipment, veterans, Rosie the Riveters, Scouts, and more take to the streets of Grand Rapids. The parade will conclude with a breathtaking Wings of Honor flyover, featuring historical WWII aircraft from across Michigan, including those built at Willow Run.

🔹 Best Viewing Locations: Ottawa Avenue to Monroe Avenue along Lyon Street, Monroe Avenue to Pearl Street over the Grand River, ending at Scribner Avenue behind the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Afterward, gather at Ah-Nab-Awen Park or along the Grand River bridges for the Wings of Honor flyover.

Bell Ringing Ceremony

At precisely 8:08 PM, bells will ring across Grand Rapids in remembrance of the moment World War II officially ended—marking the Japanese surrender at 9:08 AM September 2, Tokyo time, 80 years ago. Step outside and listen as we collectively honor this historic moment.

A heartfelt prayer service led by Bishop Walkowiak, alongside allied nation dignitaries and local religious leaders, to honor those who served and sacrificed for freedom. All are welcome to this special evening of reflection.

Greatest Generation Night at the Whitecaps
