Women In Uniform: Women in the Navy

Women in Uniform (January 24 - May 6, 2022)

This exhibition showcases rarely displayed art from the Naval History and Heritage Command's collection. Women have served in a variety of capacities in the Navy. Images range from sailors to admirals, and from Yeomen to aviators. Women have had a continuous and growing presence in uniform throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Whenever international or domestic events dictated the need, the Navy expanded its opportunities for women to serve. These artworks demonstrate the wide-ranging and varied occupations women have held as they continue to push the boundaries of prospects available to them.

Rear Admiral (retired) Samuel J. Cox, Director of Naval History and Heritage Command, and his colleague, Gale Munro, Curator of the Naval Art Gallery, virtually opened the exhibit Women in Uniform. The program gave a brief history of the role women played in naval history and give background on selected works from the exhibition.
