The Democracy Defense Project: A Forum on the State of Democracy in Michigan

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation was excited to partner with The Democracy Defense Project to invite attendees to a bipartisan forum focused on the state of democracy in Michigan on June 26, 2025.

The event included a presentation of commissioned polling from Richard Czuba and the Glengariff Group, and explored how Michigan voters view the state of democracy, trust in elections, and the role of voters in shaping public policy. Following the poll presentation, attendees heard from the Democracy Defense Project Board members, who discussed the implications of the data and offered strategies to strengthen public confidence in democratic systems.

The panel included:

  • Gov. John Engler – Former Governor of Michigan

  • Gov. James Blanchard – Former Governor of Michigan and U.S. Ambassador to Canada

  • Rep. Mike Bishop – Former U.S. Congressman and Michigan Senate Majority Leader

  • Lt. Gov. John Cherry Jr. – Former Michigan Lieutenant Governor
