Richard Nixon Pardon Proclamation and Press Conference
On September 8, 1974 President Gerald R. Ford addressed the nation from the Oval Office. President Ford proclaimed a full pardon to his predecessor, former President Richard Nixon, who had resigned the previous month. The pardon granted was for all offenses against the United States which Nixon had committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period of his Presidency. President Ford believed this act alone would allow the country to finally heal from the Watergate scandal as well as end many months or even years of any possible legal proceedings. This decision, as he stated, was his alone, and as President Ford understood, would be with him for the remainder of his Presidency and throughout his life.
