Grand Rapids Drive Head Coach Otis Smith visited the Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center to deliver a motivational speech to students. The program was co-sponsored by Mercantile Bank of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Drive and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.

Smith encouraged the students to dream big to succeed and always use their imagination.

Smith is a former National Basketball Association (NBA) player  with the Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, and Orlando Magic. He is also the former General Manager of the Orlando Magic. Smith was named Head Coach of the Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA Developmental League in September of 2014.

Smith received the Humanitarian of the Year award from Jackson University (his alma mater) in February 2002. He has been involved with programs such as Volunteers for Youth, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Boys and Girls Club of America. He was also the founder of the ‘Otis Smith Kids Foundation’ that provided free basketball clinics, summer camps, tutoring, field trips, and health screenings.
